Why an hour of Local Massage costs more than an hour of Body Massage
It looks backwards on the price list above, so it is worth explaining. A Body Massage covers
everything at a steady pace. A Local Massage spends the entire session on one region —
the neck and shoulders, the low back and one hip, one leg — working slowly through the
layers rather than passing over them. It is the most technical hour on the menu and the
most physically demanding to give, which is what the price reflects.
Which one to book is genuinely simple. If your whole body is tired, book the Body
Massage. If one specific thing has been bothering you for weeks, book the Local
Massage — an hour on the problem beats ten minutes on it inside a full-body hour.
The Combo Massage sits between the two in a different way: half the session on the body,
half on the feet, at $75 for the hour. It costs less than a body hour and more than a
foot hour because it is exactly half of each.
The Couple Massage reads high for the opposite reason: it is the only price on the list
that is not per person. $160 is two 60-minute massages, $80 each, and $240
is two 90-minute ones at $120 each — the same figures as booking separately, on one
reservation with one start time. What the line buys is the room and the second therapist
at the same hour, not a package.
Styles, not extra line items
Swedish, deep and firm pressure, acupressure, hot stone, cupping — these are techniques
applied inside the session you book, not separate purchases. You choose the length at
booking and the approach with your therapist at the start. Four hands is the one
technique that has to be arranged in advance, because it puts two therapists on one
person; the Couple Massage above needs the same two therapists, which is why it is the
booking least likely to be available to a walk-in.
Swedish
Long, flowing strokes at a relaxing pace. The default if you do not ask for anything else.
Deep tissue
Slower and firmer, working through the layers where a knot actually sits.
Acupressure
Sustained thumb and finger pressure held on specific points.
Hot stone
Smooth heated stones used to warm tight muscle before hands-on work. Free on any session of 60 minutes or more.
Cupping
Suction cups that lift tissue rather than press into it.
Four hands
Two therapists working at once, by arrangement — call ahead for this one.
Prenatal
Side-lying and supported, for pregnancy after the first trimester.
Paying
One price per service, the same whether you pay by card or cash. Gratuity is not included and is never expected. We do not bill health plans, and we are a relaxation and
wellness studio rather than a medical provider — so there is no superbill and no
insurance paperwork. If you want to read what the evidence says about massage
before you spend anything, the
NIH's overview of massage therapy
is the least commercial summary there is, and our
six guides
walk through it in plain English.
Who does the work
Massage is a licensed profession in Oregon. Every practicing therapist must hold a state
license — 625 hours of training, a national exam, an Oregon law exam and current Basic
Life Support certification — and the studio itself must hold a Board-issued facility
permit. Either can be checked on the state Board’s free public lookup, for us or for
anyone else you are considering.
